9 Worst Military Movies
79
I couldn't call this list 9 Worst War Movies because all of these movies aren't about an actual war, but they all involve some sort of military, and they all suck. And while there are certainly many military movies that are worthy of ranking on this list, sometimes I had the good sense to not visit with them. So here now are my nine (favorite) worst movies about the military. I apologize if you like them. That is, I feel sorry for you.
9. Tank Girl
I can't stand Lori Petty, and I certainly can't stand Lori Petty in this movie that had no business being made. Tank Girl is the kind of movie that makes sensible people wonder why money was spent on production of such drivel and why an actor would even consider taking the role. I don't care that it was based on some British comic book, I wish I could erase having seen this movie from my mind. This movie makes Flash Gordon look like Casablanca. In a good way.
8. In the Army Now
This half-assed attempt to re-make the magic of Stripes but set after the Gulf War fails miserably and is an insult to the men and women who served in the Persian Gulf in the early 90's. Pauly Shore and Andy Dick join the army together and soon find themselves in the desert as part of a water purification team. Add in Lori Petty, whom I just told you I loathe, and you get yourself one cracker-jack of a movie. And by cracker-jack I mean horse poop.
7. McHale's Navy/Sgt Bilko
Horray Hollywood! Even in the mid-90's your ability to rehash old television shows to turn a buck had no limits, or taste. Both movies, littered with well known T.V. and film stars, are no-go's. From Tom Arnold as a submarine commander as the titular McHale, to Steve Martin's Bilko, you get nearly three hours of terrible writing, lame sight gags, and wasted money all around. I think the only reason Tom Arnold was given the lead role in this, or any film, was because he was funny for five minutes in True Lies. The one saving grace for Navy is the all-too-brief presence of nerd-superstar Bruce Campbell. Bilko sports the late, great Phil Hartman, but even he couldn't save the movie. Drop and give me twenty, each.
6. Troma's War
My dad will be very upset with me, but the geniuses who brought us the indelible Toxic Avenger also gave us this incredibly sick (in every way) and gory war movie where ordinary citizens become hero's by fighting back against the man. If you have even heard of this movie you have to agree that Troma should have stayed its course with ole' Toxie and stayed away from the social-ecological-economic commentary of War. If you never have heard of this movie give yourself 7 points and proceed to the next movie for your chance to be proven stupid.
5. Captain Correlli's Mandolin
Que bella, Nic Cage, pizza pie, struma-little gitara, a-movie stupida.
4. Tears of the Sun
I wanted to like this movie so much. Bruce Willis, underrated Cole Hauser, and the muy caliente Monica Bellucci, all running through the war-ravaged jungles of Nigeria while trying to stay a step ahead of murderous war-lord personnel. But the movie is heavy on political commentary and very light on military structure, namely failure to obey orders. There is no doubt that everyday Soldiers are told to do things they don't like to do, but this movie takes that idea and runs with it, further from reality than most even dare. It's good to see the Navy Spec Ops team come together even though they obviously don't all agree that Willis' Navy lieutenant has decided to go off the reservation in order to save some villagers. The Navy hasn't really had a lot of good movies made about it when you consider this, Navy SEALS, hit and miss G.I. Jane, and number 7 on my list McHale's Navy (notableexceptions, A Few Good Men, Men of Honor, and Mutiny on the Bouty). Tears of the Sun is An "F" after director Antoine Fuqua's glorious "A" with Training Day.
3. Basic
I realize that John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson have a lot of fun making movies, but they tend to have a knack for hyperbole with the roles they choose. And in Basic the audience unfortunately doesn't get to have as much fun as these two actors who seem to have no clue about how to portray someone in the army. You'd think Travolta would have learned a lesson after he made The General's Daughter (not on the list but not far off it, either), but it doesn't appear so. And whoever was in charge of military consultation should have been fired or blacklisted. You've got Staff Sergeants wearing Specialist rank, f*d-up berrets, and Jackson, for some reason, donning a poncho-cape throughout. The highly-concocted and hard to comprehend "twist" ending doesn't help either. However it does make it easy to put it on my list of military drivel.
2. Ernest in the Army
I am not a big fan of movies poking fun of the military just for the sake of making a joke (see #1 on my list). I know first-hand that there are plenty of things to laugh at within the military, but I don't like it when the military is generalized as a buffoonery of circus proportions. And I know I am blaspheming those hard-core Ernest-philes, but after his sappy song from Ernest Goes to Camp made me cry when I was 10, it was all downhill for Jim Varney (save for his voice over work in Toy Story). RIP.
1. Delta Farce
Admittedly I did not see this movie. Why would I? A port-o-potty of a movie starring a port-o-potty "comedian," Larry the Cable Guy. I think I get the gist. Some hillbillies join the Army National Guard or something and accidentally find their way into Mexico, thinking they are in Iraq, and hilarity ensues when these underachieving Soldier-types try to band together and overcome their shortcomings and save a village. That is knee-slapping. Riotous. Oh, it's also offensive to the real men and women who serve in the armed forces. This is the exact type of movie that I can only hope ends careers of producers, writers, directors, and actors. People involved with this movie don't deserve to be in the business and should instead be handing out flick-pamphlets on the Vegas strip.

I thought Tears of the Sun was pretty good. But then again, I caught it on a regular channel. Don't think I'd pay to see it.
I hate wearing panties.
I liked Basic (the guy from Wings was awesome in that)-I guess I was one of the bright individuals who understood the twist ending. Tears of the Sun was entertaining, but not neccessarily good.
Where's Pearl Harbor? Transformers? In fact, virtually any movie by Michael Bay (or Jerry Bruckheimer, for that matter).
I'm sorry you watched all these movies. Torturous. Throughout Delta Farce (can't believe I actually watched the whole thing) I sat there scratching my head wondering what kind of reserves just throw their guys into war zones without training, that and identifying all of the military discrepancies I could find. Not to mention the whole mixed-up Mexico thing. I haven't seen Tears of the Sun and I guess it's a good thing because I've never seen a Bruce Willis movie I didn't like.
I don't think the military side of Transformers was really their focus. I think the producers were focusing a bit more on the transformers.
This list is all over the place. Nearly all of these movies like Delta Farce and Ernie's Army are comedies, and therefore the last films I expect any accuracy or realism. Tears of the Sun was an odd story, but uses reasonably accurate combat sequences. This list should be accurately called "Dumb Movies with a Military Theme".
I did not see Tears of the Sun cos I'm 'over'Bruce Willis!
I do agree with all of your others Movies. If they were supposed to be comedies why were they not funny?
The problem I have with your picks is that almost all of them didn't take themselves seriously. They were designed to be stupid for a comedic entertainment value.
And many of these movies don't really poke fun at the military so much as put stupid characters in them (e.g. Delta Farce, Ernest in the Army).
The ones that really fail are those trying to be serious, and screw things over ending up being funny because of their failure. May I point to Delta Force (and squeals) or anything else by Chuck Norris, Rambo (any of them), Red Dawn, The A-Team, anything done by Arnold Schwarzenegger, the entire list is very long.
As for Transformers, that's one of the few films in history that actually got a lot of the military correct.
i share mixed feelings about the topic. I served 6 years so i know a bit about the subject matter holly wood gets wrong so often. I do feel a bit put out when they get stuff wrong but i also understand the comedy so eh. I can't stand it when they get the uniform wrong over and over again but i believe this is done on purpose so potential terrorists cannot accurately create a passable uniform with which to impersonate and infiltrate...course they could simply go to the goodwill. What really gets me is when they use words that sound neat incorrectly, case in point...Transformers, while sabot (SABOH) rounds are armor piercing they are generally only found in the 120mm variety ie the M1 Abrams tank. deffinately not in the 5.56mm variety ie the M16s, M4 carbines, and M249s the soldiers where carrying. Oh and the 37mm police issue teargas grenade launchers they had in the final scenes were neat but again not capable of firing high velocity sabot rounds... to offer a positive, if you want to see a pretty good representation of the uniform and (chuckle) Black non comissioned officer see "Major Pain" i love mr. wayans, aside from the over the top moments he nailed the role right down to the readjustment if his DI round brown after bumping it into the gangster kid (see the first formation scene) to the tooth sucking noises, the correct amount of jewelry to the way he ate, all top shelf 9 out of 10 for the role. the movie was funny to boot. Sir i agree that the movies on your list here represent some of the worst abortions to come from that liquor store dumpster called Holly Wood.
i disagree, sorry. i thought tears of the sun was pretty good aswel as pearl harbor. they are different in a sense of how action movies and war is portrayed..they carry a different personality.
Okay you guys take things way too seriously. These are MOVIES not training films. In the Army Now was funny as hell, Sgt. Bilko was somewhat funny, Basic was very entertaining, and you people are crazy to say that Tears of the Sun was not a good movie as it was the best of the bunch- one of the extras in the film actually witnessed his family being slaughtered as portrayed in the movie and it was so realistic that he could be seen breaking down during filming and they actually used it in the movie. And by the way, Pearl Harbor was a good movie, but it will never be Torra, Torra, Torra but then again it was never meant to be so it will stay in my video collection.
Semper Fi'
Tears of the sun was a good movie. Mind you i still believe in real life SF's wouldve taken the americans kicking and screaming if they had too. leaving everyone else behind to die.
Realistic military movies that should be on the top of your lists as an epic failure: The Rock.
They mistaken the SAS for the bloody Mi6 for crying out loud.
What about three kings? You really think iraqs special forces (republican gaurd) would run away screaming from the sight of sadam husseins vehicle???
What about behind enemy lines? Although the missle jet figter sequence was beautiful!!
You cannot take these spoofs and stupid comedys seriously, itll be like sayin police academy(s) was so unrealistic to real police work.

Okay...I concede Troma's War..you have to have had a fifth of Jim Beam and friends who are buzzed to find this so lousy it is amusing...but Ernest is an aquired taste..Challenge: on the rainest day of the year invite four or five friends over with lots of quart bottles of beer and show any three Jim Varney movies in a row. After the third movie you will have forgotten all about Wall Street...of course you will also have forgotten your shoes, wallet, and car keys, because by then you will have totally lost your mind!!!
